Itinerary

Tuesday, September 13, 2022: Welcome to Colorado!     

Transfer to a local airport for your flight to Denver, Colorado. Upon arrival at the Denver Airport, meet your local guide and board the motorcoach. Depending on the arrival time a stop will be made for lunch on your own. Travel north through the valleys of the Front Range and make your way to the small town of Greeley and check into your hotel with free time to relax after your journey. This evening, enjoy a one of a kind experience as you visit the Colorado Model Railroad Museum, which houses the nation's largest model railroad, for a private tour and welcome dinner.

Wednesday, September 14, 2022: Colorado Railroad Museum, Pike's Peak, & Garden of the Gods    

Depart Greeley and travel south to Golden to visit the Colorado Railroad Museum. Stroll through the Museum's 15 acre rail yard with 100 narrow and standard gauge steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, and G-scale garden railway. Watch as Colorado railroad history is brought back to life in the Roundhouse restoration facility with a working turntable and visit the 1880s-replica Depot Museum housing thousands of rare artifacts. Continue south to the charming town of Manitou Springs with free time to explore and have lunch on your own. After lunch it's time to travel to the top of America's Mountain as you board the brand new Pike's Peak Cog Railway for a scenic and emotional journey to the place that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to pen "America The Beautiful." Enjoy amazing views, wildlife, and the new Summit Visitors Center. After this amazing experience, visit Garden of the Gods for sightseeing, then travel on to Colorado Springs with the evening free. Next to the hotel you can visit the historic Denver & Rio Grand Depot to explore and have dinner on your own at one of three restaurants.

Thursday, September 15, 2022: Royal Gorge Park & Bridge & the Royal Gorge Route Railroad

Depart Colorado Springs and travel to Royal Gorge Park & Bridge, where the world's highest suspension bridge towers 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River. Here you will have time to walk out on the bridge and explore other sights in the park. Take a short drive to Canon City to board the Royal Gorge Route Railroad for a vintage train ride along the legendary Arkansas River deep within the Gorge. Vista Dome Service offers the most breathtaking views and lunch at your comfortable booth style seating. In the afternoon, travel west with a rest stop in the old mining town of Salida. After a wonderful day in Colorado, arrive in the small town of Alamosa for an overnight stay. Dinner is included at a local restaurant.

Friday, September 16, 2022: Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad & Durango    

This morning, "All Aboard" the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, considered the finest remaining example of a once vast network of narrow gauge lines linking together the Rocky Mountain Mining Camps. This unique railroad has been called by author Lucius Beebe, "the most awesomely spectacular example of mountain railroading in North America." Leave Antonito, Colorado and travel to Osier where you'll disembark and enjoy lunch. After lunch, continue your ride over Cumbres Pass and on to Chama, NM. Then re-board your motorcoach and travel to the old west mining town of Durango for a two night stay. This evening, join the group for an included dinner at the historic Strater Hotel.

Saturday, September 17, 2022: Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

This morning, start with a Yard Tour, then ride the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, one of the last such railroads operating in the United States. "All Aboard!" for a delightful trip through the Colorado Rockies between Durango and Silverton. The rugged peaks, alpine meadows, and crystal lakes, take you back to the early days of the West when the mountain men searched this untouched land for traces of bear and mountain lion. Upon arrival in Silverton, enjoy some free time to explore the many shops and have lunch on your own. Meet up with the motorcoach and return to Durango with the evening free to explore and have dinner on your own.

Sunday, September 18, 2022: Arches National Park & Moab, UT

Depart Durango and travel through beautiful southwest Colorado, crossing into Utah on your way to Moab. Stop in the town of Moab to enjoy some free time and eat lunch at your leisure. This afternoon travel to nearby Arches National Park for touring. The unique geology of the area created the highest concentration of natural arches in the world with 2,000 named arches within the park boundary. Visit park highlights including Balance Rock, The Windows, and Delicate Arch Viewpoint. Return to Moab and check into your hotel with some time to relax before an included dinner at a local restaurant. Later this evening, enjoy a Stargazing Experience with local astronomers to explore the wonders of the night sky and our universe. The dark skies of the canyonlands will allow you to view planets, galaxies, star clusters, nebulae, and other breathtaking celestial sights with high powered telescopes that will fill you with wonder.

Monday, September 19, 2022: Canyonlands National Park & Salt Lake City, UT

This morning take a scenic drive to Canyonlands National Park for sightseeing the Island in the Sky district including the Visitors Centre, Green River Overlook, and Grandview Point. Next arrive at Dead Horse Point State Park for one of the most spectacular scenes in the southwest and enjoy a picnic lunch. You will see the expanse of Canyonlands National Park, stretching to the south, and the mighty Colorado River 2,000 feet below. After lunch, depart the Moab area and travel north towards Salt Lake City. On arrival into Salt Lake City check into your downtown hotel. Tonight, enjoy a final group dinner at a local restaurant.

Tuesday, September 20, 2022: Depart for Central PA 

Transfer to the Salt Lake Airport for your journey back to Central Pennsylvania.

This tour includes moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, up stairs, or on uneven walking surfaces, should be expected.  

General Information

This Ramble is subject to cancellation due to insufficient and/or late registration. Please contact the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania or go online at www.rrmuseumpa.org for membership options. Included in these rates is $150.00, which is a contribution to the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. This amount is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. (Contribution may be less if the minimum number of passengers is not achieved.) The 75.00 non-member fee in these rates also is a contribution to the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Masks are currently required on all forms of public transportation including airplanes and in the airport. Additional travel requirements including testing and vaccinations could be required prior and during travel. As travel policies are rapidly changing due to COVID-19, final requirements will be communicated prior to departure.

Register by July 1, 2022!

Deposit of $500 per person is due to AAA Central Penn with completed registration from to confirm the reservation.

Full payment is due to AAA Central Penn by July 1, 2022. 

Cancellation/Penalties

Insurance

For your protection AAA recommends travel insurance. Pre-existing medical conditions may be waived with proper coverage if travel insurance is purchased within 14 days of initial deposit only. Other conditions may apply; ask your travel agent. AAA recommends Allianz.

Clothing/Climate

Temperatures in Colorado and Utah in September average between the 50s and the 70s depending on location with cooler mornings and evenings and cooler temperatures at higher elevations. Pack for a variety of temperatures. Casual clothes that can be layered work best along with comfortable walking shoes. 

Travel Assistance

For personal comfort, group participants who need assistance are required to have a traveling companion who is capable of and totally responsible for providing the needed assistance.
