Layers Are Key. Prepare for Sun, Mist, and Midnight Light

You’ve booked your Alaska adventure. Now comes the fun part: packing. In the land where the sun sometimes lingers until midnight, glaciers glint in the early evening and mist rolls in over fjords, your suitcase becomes your survival kit – and your style statement. Here’s how to pack like you’re prepared for all of the elements:

Layer 1: Base & Mid- layers for variable temps
Start with moisture-wicking base layers (think merino or synthetic) to handle sweat from hikes or cozy train rides. Then add a warm mid-layer like fleece or light down – especially if you’ll be near glaciers, rivers or high altitudes.

Layer 2: Outer shell for wind, rain and sea spray
A waterproof, breathable jacket is non-negotiable. Even summer outings can bring misty fjord boat trips, sea spray and foggy mornings. Pack waterproof pants if you’re doing serious outdoor excursions.

Layer 3: Footwear, accessories & seasonal extras
Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are essential. Add waterproof socks or gaiters. Bring a warm hat, gloves and scarf for glacier-viewing or early-morning tours. Sunglasses and sunscreen? Yes – even in Alaska. Long summer days equal strong rays. And for shoulder-season travel, lightweight thermal gloves and a fleece beanie will save you.

Bonus items: For comfort & fun
– Reusable water bottle (many lodges have refill stations)
– Day-pack for hikes, excursions, or train stops and ports of call
– Swimwear (many accommodations have hot tubs or heated pools)
– Binoculars & compact camera (for wildlife viewing & scenic stops)
– A dress or nice outfit if you plan a special dinner or scenic train ride (preferably one you can add an outer layer to!)

Packing tip: Mix function + style
Still want to look polished while sporting that rugged, outdoorsy vibe? Try neutral layers, pops of color for fun and one solid “going out” piece to make the transition from wilderness to lodge seamless.
