The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and celebration—but it’s also one of the most dangerous times of year on the road. That’s why AAA, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD), and Waymo have teamed up to remind everyone: celebrate responsibly and always plan a sober ride home.

Why This Matters

December is Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and the statistics are sobering:
- 4,931 lives were lost in December alone between 2019–2023 due to drunk driving crashes (NHTSA).
- In December 2023, 1,038 people died in alcohol-related crashes.
- Nationwide, drunk driving deaths have increased by 22% since 2019, and more than 13,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2023—for the second year in a row.
That means every 85 seconds, someone is killed or injured in a drunk driving crash. These tragedies are preventable, and AAA, MADD, and Waymo are committed to changing the trend.
What’s New This Year?
This partnership is more than a seasonal campaign—it’s the start of a five-year initiative to reduce impaired driving deaths by 20%. Together, we’re combining education, technology, and community engagement to make roads safer for everyone.
Waymo is offering a special incentive:
- Use code SAFEHOLIDAYS for a $5 discount on Waymo rides (valid through New Year’s Eve).
- Available in Waymo’s current markets: San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

How You Can Help

- Talk to your family and teens about making safe choices.
- Use rideshare or designated driver programs—or take advantage of Waymo’s discount if you’re in their service area.
- Spread the word: Share this message on social media and encourage others to drive sober.
The Bigger Picture
MADD continues to advocate for lifesaving technology through the HALT Drunk Driving Law, which requires anti-drunk driving systems in all new cars—a change that could save 10,000 lives per year. Learn more about MADD’s mission and resources at madd.org.
AAA has been committed to road safety for over a century. From roadside assistance to advocacy, we’re here to help keep you safe on every journey. Learn more at AAA.com.
