Newport, Rhode Island

In the 19th century, Newport, Rhode Island was America’s Versailles. It was here that the great merchant princes and robber barons of the Gilded Age erected the elaborate summerhouses they so ingenuously dubbed “cottages.” At the height of its splendor, a Newport season was a giddy whirl of grand fêtes, yacht races and elaborate beach picnics for assorted Vanderbilts, Astors and Morgan’s. Today, it is the privileged traveler who marvels at the splendor of great mansions like The Breakers, The Elms, or Rosecliff. Gone are the days when “Tessie” Oelrichs, one of Newport’s fabled hostesses, had 12 skeleton ships anchored offshore and dramatically lit for her legendary “White Ball.”

Visit Rose Island Lighthouse Overlooking Narragansett Bay, this restored 1869 lighthouse still serves as a navigation aid for sailors and is operated by vacationers who act as “lighthouse keepers” in exchange for accommodations.

Marble House, the Vanderbilt family envisioned this home to be the “Temple of the Arts” in America. This opulent stone palace, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, was commissioned in 1888, and is opened for tours.

Take a cliff walk stroll along a picturesque mile and a quarter of Newport’s famous Cliff Walk, the path between the rocky coastline and the “backyards” of many of Bellevue Avenue’s palatial cottages.

View the Public Garden, the first botanical gardens in the country, an oasis in the heart of the city, The garden is home to a majestic monument of George Washington and the famous swan boats, which grace the waters of the lagoon.

Browse Newbury Street, an eclectic collection of 19th-century brownstones, upscale boutiques, sidewalk cafes and trendy galleries line this enchanting street, situated in the historic Back Bay section of the city.

Follow the Freedom Trail. Begin at Boston Common and follow in the footsteps of our forefathers on this 2.5-mile trail delineated by red bricks, highlighting 16 of Boston’s most historical sites from the American Revolution.

Portland, Maine

While Portland’s name has changed over the years, the essence of the area has not. Today, Portland still remains a vibrant fishing and commercial port, Maine’s largest city, and its cultural, social and economic capital.

Explore Old Port with its brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets to the quaint seaside village of Kennebunkport. Shoppers will enjoy the Old Port and downtown area that feature many unique boutiques, shops, galleries and restaurants.

Visit Victorian Mansion, one of the finest examples of Italian villa style architecture in the country. The mansion was built between 1858 and 1860. Other city sights you’ll see are the Portland Observatory, Portland’s 100-year-old City Hall, and the stunning Victorian homes that line the Eastern Promenade.

Enjoy the Portland Head Lighthouse and the picturesque White Mountains on the Cog Railway.

Saint John (for the Bay of Fundy), Canada

Saint John lies on the Bay of Fundy, which boasts the highest tides in the world and the astonishing Reversing Rapids, caused when the tides change and the river is forced to reverse direction and flow upstream. Discover the inspired eateries that have put uptown Saint John on the map as a true foodie destination and venture on to the quaint seaside town of St. Andrews by-the-Sea and St. Martins for a relaxed stroll.

Witness the unique natural phenomenon of a river changing direction when the tremendous tides in the Bay of Fundy, the 170-mile-long ocean bay on Canada’s east coast, collide with the mighty Saint John River.

Visit the Carleto n Martello Tower built on a cliff with a spectacular view of Saint John and its harbor. The tower dates back to the War of 1812 and features a barracks room as well as a visitors center.

Explore one of the oldest towns in the province, St. Andrews by-the-sea offers a perfect blend of charm and modern resort amenities. Beautiful architecture, fabulous restaurants and quaint boutiques grace this National Historic District.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Relax on a drive through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside to the moody, weathered village of Peggy’s Cove. Walk along the rocks to view the craggy coastline with its bold glacier-formed outcroppings of granite and its impressive lighthouse.

Drive through the softer South Shore area back to Halifax and enjoy another view of the city.
