7 Tips Every Student Driver Should Know

Heading off to college is an exciting milestone filled with new experiences, greater independence, and plenty of responsibility. For students bringing a vehicle to campus or commuting to class, understanding basic car care is an important part of staying safe and avoiding costly surprises. AAA helps by providing care car and safety tips for college students to remember.

“Making vehicle care part of the back-to-school conversation gives parents peace of mind and equips young drivers for real independence,” said Shane Meyer, Approved Auto Repair Manager at AAA Central Penn. “Whether commuting to class or living on campus, knowing standard car maintenance and emergency protocol is essential for staying safe on the road.”

Before students hit the road this semester, AAA Central Penn recommends reviewing these essential car care and safety tips for college students to remember:

Car Care Tip #1 – Check Tire Pressure Regularly

Properly inflated tires can improve safety, fuel efficiency, and tire life. Check tire pressure monthly using a gauge and compare it to the recommended PSI listed inside the driver’s door jamb. Students should also know where the spare tire and jack are located and understand how to change a flat tire.

Car Care Tip #2 – Stay on Top of Maintenance

Routine maintenance helps prevent unexpected breakdowns. Review the vehicle owner’s manual for recommended oil changes, battery checks, brake inspections, and fluid replacement schedules.

Car Care Tip #3 – Find a Trusted Repair Shop Near Campus

Don’t wait until something goes wrong. Identify a reputable repair facility near campus before an emergency occurs. AAA members can find nearby AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities by visiting https://www.aaa.com/autorepair.

Other Reminders for Students Heading Back to College

Safety Tip #1 – Pack an Emergency Kit

A well-stocked emergency kit can make all the difference during an unexpected roadside situation. Include essentials such as:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • First-aid kit
  • Bottled water
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Blanket
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Basic hand tools

Students attending school in colder climates should also pack an ice scraper, snow brush, and traction material.

Safety Tip #2 – Keep Your AAA Membership Handy

AAA membership provides 24/7 roadside assistance for flat tires, dead batteries, fuel delivery, towing, and more. Be sure your student carries their AAA membership card or downloads the AAA Mobile app.

Safety Tip #3 – Review Insurance Coverage

Before move-in day, check with your insurance provider to ensure coverage is up to date. Students attending school out of state should verify their policy covers them wherever they’ll be driving. It’s also worth asking about potential good student discounts.

Safety Tip #4 – Keep Valuables Out of Sight

Whether parked on campus or at an apartment complex, vehicles can be targets for theft. Remove electronics, backpacks, and other valuables from plain view whenever possible.

Drive Into the School Year with Confidence

A little preparation now can help students navigate the school year with greater confidence and fewer roadside headaches. By understanding basic vehicle maintenance, preparing for emergencies, and knowing where to turn for help, young drivers can focus on what matters most: making the most of their college experience.
