You’ve probably heard about the REAL ID. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has attempted to roll out the REAL ID Act as federal law, but it has been delayed numerous times since the act was passed in 2005. This new federal requirement, which took effect on May 7, 2025, will impact how you travel and access specific secure locations nationwide.
If, like many, you’re unsure how to get a REAL ID and you need one, this article provides more information to help you take action and get your REAL ID as soon as possible.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state ID card that is compliant with the federal security standards outlined in the REAL ID law. It’s a replacement for your current license or ID card, but it doesn’t look any different except for a star at the top right corner that indicates compliance with the new law. You now need a REAL ID-compliant document for domestic travel and accessing federal facilities.
The REAL ID law recommended that the federal government set standards that regulate the production and issuance of identification cards. As a result, states must adhere to the minimum security standards defined by the REAL ID Act. Federal agencies, such as the TSA, are also prohibited from accepting noncompliant sources of identification for certain official purposes.
These official purposes, as outlined by law, restrict individuals 18 years and older from flying domestically and entering certain federal facilities, unless they possess a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative form of identification.
Why Do You Need a REAL ID?
What do you need the REAL ID for? This is a common question that has been popping up since the law came into effect. The purpose of the upgraded ID is to ensure that you’re compliant with the federal security requirements and not just state requirements. But is it a must to get a REAL ID?
No, it’s not. The ID is only applicable to individuals 18 years and older who wish to use their state-issued ID and license for domestic air travel and accessing places that demand federally acceptable documentation, such as military bases and other facilities.
Activities you don’t need the compliant ID for include:
- Driving.
- Accessing hospitals.
- Voting.
- Entering post offices.
- Visiting federal courts.
- Accessing federal benefits.
Alternatives to REAL ID
A REAL ID is not the only choice outlined by the law. There are other federally accepted alternatives you can use to access the same services that a REAL ID permits. Some of these recognized identification documents include the following:
- State-issued Enhanced ID or Enhanced Driver’s License
- U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
- U.S. Department of Defense ID, including those issued to dependents
- Permanent resident card
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
While the REAL ID is not mandatory for most aspects of daily life, not having one or any other accepted ID will restrict your ability to travel and access certain locations. For instance, showing up at a TSA checkpoint without a REAL ID or an alternative is likely to subject you to further screening for verification purposes.

What Documents Do You Need for a REAL ID?
The requirements for a REAL ID can vary from one state to another, but they are all split into three categories: proof of identity, proof of Social Security number and proof of residency. To get a PA REAL ID, you need the following:
- Proof of identity: You’ll need one document that can prove your identity. That can be a U.S. birth certificate issued by a government agency, a U.S. passport or passport card, an Employment Authorization Card and a Permanent Resident Card, among others.
- Proof of Social Security number: You’ll need one document that proves your Social Security number. The document should display all nine digits of your SSN and have a name that matches your proof of identity. Applicable documents include the SSA-1099 form, non-SSA-1099 form and W-2 form with full SSN.
- Proof of residency: To prove your Pennsylvania residency, you must bring two documents that display your address. These can be your tax records, state driver’s license or ID, auto insurance card or even a mortgage agreement.
Visit the state’s website for the full list of requirements, which cover special cases, such as gender designation changes, non-U.S. citizenship, or the absence of a birth certificate.
How to Get a REAL ID in Pennsylvania
Getting a REAL ID in Pennsylvania follows two processes: online and in-person. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) provides these two application procedures, depending on which one you qualify for.
Pre-Verification Application (Online Process)
If you obtained your first state-issued ID card, driver’s license or learner’s permit after September 1, 2003, the state may already have your documents on file. You’ll first need to complete an online pre-verification form. The review process can take up to 15 days, and you’ll receive a notification of application status via email or mail.
Once you get approved, you can order the REAL ID online after paying a one-time fee of $30 plus the standard renewal fee.
In-Person Application
You’ll need to apply for pre-verification in person if you don’t qualify for the online application. If you’re a non-U.S. citizen, have changed your name or date of birth after your last issuance, you must visit a PennDOT REAL ID Center or Driver License Center to get verified.
The speed of the process varies depending on the center you visit. REAL ID centers offer the fastest way to get approved. Verification takes place at the time of service, allowing you to walk away with your REAL ID on the same day. Driver License Centers verify your documents in person, but there’s a 15-day wait time, after which your REAL ID will be mailed to you.
Like the online procedure, in-person visits also require paying the one-time fee plus renewal fees.
REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions for Pennsylvania Residents
Here are frequently asked questions about REAL IDs in Pennsylvania:
- What makes your license a REAL ID? Your license or state ID should be marked by a gold or black star in the top right corner. That’s the only physical difference between a standard and a REAL ID-compliant card.
- Do I need to reapply for a REAL ID? Once you’re verified and receive your Pennsylvania REAL ID, you won’t need to reapply. Any future driver’s license renewals will be REAL ID-compliant unless you opt out.
- Can I fly without a REAL ID? Yes. You don’t need to upgrade your license or state ID to fly domestically. You can use acceptable identification alternatives.
- How long is a REAL ID valid? Your first REAL ID is valid for your current license or ID card term plus four more years.
