Indoor air quality (IAQ) helps you and your family feel comfortable in your home. Good IAQ means fewer allergens and irritants like dust, pet dander and other contaminants that can negatively affect health. Follow these tips to improve your home's air quality.
1. Change Your Air Filters
Check your air filters periodically, including those in the air conditioning system, kitchen vents, dryer and other appliances. Your HVAC system cycles air throughout your home while filtering pollutants.
Eventually, the buildup of those contaminants can affect your air quality and how your HVAC system operates. Regularly inspect, maintain and replace your air filters to help improve air quality in your home.
2. Check Your Air Ducts
Your air ducts move air throughout your home. Many pollutants can accumulate in your ducts over time, such as pet dander, mold, dust and allergens, which can all change your home's air quality. Hire a professional to ensure your ducts are free from debris.
3. Use Cooking Vents
If you have gas appliances, like stoves, in your home, you should always use cooking vents. Gas stoves release nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, which are harmful pollutants that alter air quality. Electric ovens also pose the risk of these chemicals, though in much lower quantities.
When cooking, it's safe to use stove vents or open a window to help with air circulation.
4. Keep Your House Clean
You can improve indoor air quality by cleaning your home regularly. Your carpet or rugs collect dirt, dander and dust within the fibers and affect IAQ. Use a HEPA-filter vacuum once or twice a week on carpets and rugs — or forgo using carpets altogether to avoid trapping contaminants.
You should also clear clutter from your home and dust regularly to help improve cleanliness. Washing bedding, curtains and other soft items can reduce harmful contaminants.
5. Control Your Home's Humidity
Letting your home become too humid and moist can make it susceptible to mildew and mold growth. Dehumidifiers can reduce the moisture in the air, preventing pollutants and contaminants from forming.
