We are now in the General Enrollment Period (GEP), which runs from January 1st to March 31st. This is a special time when you can sign up for Medicare Part B if you missed your first chance.

When You Turn 65:
You usually sign up for Medicare when you turn 65.
Sometimes, you can delay signing up if you have health insurance through your job or your spouse’s job (with a company that has more than 20 employees).

Special Situations:
If you retire or lose your job-based insurance, you can sign up for Medicare Part B outside of your first chance.

General Enrollment Period:
If you don’t have a special situation, you can sign up for Medicare Part B during the GEP (January 1st to March 31st).
Your Medicare will start on July 1st.

Penalties:
If you don’t sign up for Medicare Part B when you’re first eligible, you might have to pay a higher cost for the rest of your life. The cost goes up 10% for each year you didn’t sign up.
