Highlights
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
Puerto Plata was inhabited by the Taino people for centuries before Christopher Columbus arrived and founded the city in the early 1500s. By the 20th century, Puerto Plata had emerged as the Dominican Republic’s main tourism hub. Nature, adventure, history – Puerto Plata has it all.
Fun Things to Do:
- Hike through the lush, protected jungle of El Choco National Park, enjoying the park’s two lagoons.
- Swim with dolphins at World Ocean, the largest manmade dolphin habitat in the world.
- Kayak on the water at the Manatee Reserve.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
Few places enjoy as dramatic a setting as Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas' principal town and the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The town sprawls around a deep horseshoe-shaped bay, backed by green hills that sparkle at night from the lights of houses and shops. The town was built by the Danish in the 1600s as a haven for seafarers and their lucrative, shipping-related businesses. The wide, arched entrances of their stone warehouses, now shops, accommodated cargo for shipping and receiving. Today, they add immeasurably to the town's 17th-century charm.
Fun Things to Do:
- Beach hop between some of the world's most beautiful beaches.
- Ride the St. Thomas Skyride to the top of Paradise point for breathtaking views .
- Visit Blackbeard's Castle, built in 1679, and see the world's largest collection of life-sized pirate statues.
Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis
The British picked Basseterre as the colonial capital in 1727, and, despite hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and fires, the city has prospered. Today, the island's largest and only true city is a pleasant mishmash of things past and present.
Fun Things to Do:
- Visit the National Museum and the St. Christopher Heritage Society to learn about the history, heritage, and culture of the islands.
- Hit The Strip on South Frigate Bay where you can enjoy the island vibes all day at restaurants, bars, and open-air dance floors.
- Ride the West Indies' last railway, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway
Tour Activity Level: 2
