Highlights
Newport, RI
View the fabulous millionaire mansions built in Renaissance, Rococo, French and Victorian style atop Newport’s cliffs. Its yacht-filled harbor has hosted the America’s Cup. Closer to sea level, the city’s streets and sandy shores offer a fine array of picturesque locations for taking in the Rhode Island sea breeze.
FUN THINGS TO DO:
- Visit Rose Island Lighthouse Overlooking Narragansett Bay. This restored 1869 lighthouse still serves as a navigation aid for sailors and is operated by vacationers who act as "lighthouse keepers" in exchange for accommodations.
- Marble House, the Vanderbilt family envisioned this home to be the "Temple of the Arts" in America. This opulent stone palace, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, was commissioned in 1888, and is opened for tours.
- Take a cliff walk stroll along a picturesque mile and a quarter of Newport's famous Cliff Walk, the path between the rocky coastline and the "backyards" of many of Bellevue Avenue's palatial cottages.
Halifax, NS, Canada
Located on the shores of the world’s second-largest natural harbor, the “City of Trees” adds to the pastoral beauty of Canada’s maritime region. An extensive network of walking trails extends from the waterfront out to a series of beautiful parks and vibrant gardens, inviting exploration.
FUN THINGS TO DO:
- Explore the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's extensive collection, with over 2,000 permanent works.
- Take a historical and anecdote-filled tour through the streets of Halifax. Explore the hilltop fortress and the Citadel, and stroll through the beautiful Victorian-style public gardens.
- Relax on a drive through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside to the moody, weathered village of Peggy's Cove. Walk along the rocks to view the craggy coastline with its bold glacier-formed outcroppings of granite and its impressive lighthouse. Drive through the softer South Shore area back to Halifax, and enjoy another view of the city.
Sept-Iles, QC, Canada
Sept-Iles stands proud in the Côte-Nord region, where roads are scarce. It looks over the St. Lawrence River as it widens into the mighty Gulf of St. Lawrence. While this corner of Canada may be better known for its endless landscapes of forests, lakes and early inhabitants, the Innu people, still reside in the area.
FUN THINGS TO DO:
- Visit the Musée Shaputan Museum, which offers an excellent insight into Innu nomadic culture, and the circular hall features four sections to represent each season, with examples of traditional dress and sculpture, as well as mythology.
- Le Vieux Poste offers another glimpse into the past, a snapshot of life on a seventeenth-century fur-trading post, where the earliest French-speaking arrivals first encountered native hunters.
- The Gulf of St. Lawrence is also a place to spot the ocean’s great mammals; where these waters once attracted hunters, they now attract visitors keen to set eyes on minke, humpback and killer whales, which are among the 13 common species spotted here.
Saguenay, QC, Canada
As it flows into the St. Lawrence River, the Saguenay River winds through a majestic fjord to reveal a host of picturesque villages. Natural beauty surrounds Saguenay Harbor. For those who like to increase their knowledge of local culture and heritage, there are many museums to discover. According to folklore, the kingdom of Saguenay came into existence in the 16th and 17th centuries.
FUN THINGS TO DO:
- “La Pulperie de Chicoutimi” presents many diverse exhibits including the entire house of famed painter Arthur Villeneuve.
- The Bagotville Air Defense Museum presents an altogether military experience with bilingual interpretation panels narrating the history of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Here you can view the only MIG-23 military aircraft in Canada. You might even see the current F-18 fighters in flight.
- If natural history is more to your taste, then a visit to the “Centre de Découverte le Fjord du Saguenay” will inform and entertain. The presentations and exhibits explain how the fjord was formed in this glacial valley and the myths and legends of the kingdom.
- The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park is one of the world’s best locations for whale watching, and the whales often converge in the bay. You may see several species including minke, fin whales, belugas and even blue whales. The anticipation is almost overwhelming when you hear their surfacing blows. It feels like a privilege to watch the spectacle in this glorious natural setting.
