Thursday, September 12: Flight 93 National Memorial, Fallingwater- Frank Lloyd Wrights Home

5:30AM: Motorcoach will depart Lititz,  Penn Cinema, 541 Airport Road, Lititz.

6:30AM: Motorcoach will depart Harrisburg, AAA Central Penn office, 2301 Paxton Church Road, upper lot behind the building; travel to Shanksville, PA with a food rest stop en route.

Pay your respects during a visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial, located at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The memorial was designed to honor the passengers and crew, who bravely stopped the terrorists from reaching their intended target. At the Visitor Center, explore exhibits which pay tribute to the heroes, and detail the events of September 11th. Included in the tour is the Memorial Plaza, where the Wall of Names commemorate the 40 heroes of Flight 93. The 93 foot Tower of Voices, houses 40 wind chimes, one for each passenger and crew member who died in the crash.

This afternoon enjoy lunch at the Coal Miners Diner followed by a guided tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's house, Fallingwater, led by a professional interpreter. We'll discuss how he utilized the architecture of the home to integrate the house with its beautiful natural landscapes. You will become aware of the rhythmic interplay between interior and exterior space by the numerous terraces, open-air walkways and unexpected views of the trees and water.  This evening arrive at the hotel to check in with time to freshen up before dinner at the Historic Stone House Restaurant. Friday, September 13: Kentuck Knob, Mantyla House, Duncan House, Quecreek Mine Rescue Site 

The day will begin with breakfast at the hotel, before departing for another day of touring. First stop will be at Kentuck Knob for a tour of the area's second Wright-designed home, described by many visitors as "one I could live in." Then tour the area's newest Wright home, Mantyla House. This home has an interesting history as it was built in another state and then moved to the current location at Polymath Park. We'll also tour the Duncan house, also on the grounds of Polymath Park. The Duncan is a simple Usonian design and was moved to this location from Lisle, Illinois. Enjoy lunch at Treetops Restaurant followed by a visit to the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site. Here, you’ll hear the miraculous account of the nine miners who were trapped 240 feet beneath a farmer’s field in 2002 and will learn about the challenges that occurred during their rescue. We'll depart for Central Pennsylvania in the early evening with a fast food dinner stop en-route. (Breakfast, Lunch)

This tour requires moderate physical activity. The itinerary blends some longer days with shorter days and more leisure time. Walking tours, as well as walking slightly longer distances, upstairs, or on uneven walking surfaces, should be expected.

Payment

$150 per person deposit is due at the time of booking to confirm your reservation. Final payment is due to AAA by  July 12, 2024.  
 

Cancellation/Penalties

A $25 per person cancellation fee will be charged by Discoveries in addition to any other supplier’s fees.  From July 12, 2024 to day of departure no refunds.

Insurance

For your protection AAA recommends travel insurance. Pre-existing medical conditions may be waived with proper coverage if travel insurance is purchased within 14 days of initial deposit only. Other conditions may apply; ask your travel agent. AAA recommends Allianz.

Clothing/Climate

Temperatures for Pennsylvania in September average in the 70s. Casual clothes and comfortable walking shoes are recommended; be prepared for potential inclement weather.

Travel Assistance

For personal comfort, group participants who need assistance are required to have a traveling companion who is capable of and totally responsible for providing the needed assistance.
