Classroom/In-Car Lessons
As we age, changes in our strength, mobility and flexibility; vision and scanning skills make us less comfortable and less in-control behind the wheel.
To help maturing drivers tune up their driving skills and refresh their knowledge of the rules of the road, AAA Central Penn offers Mature Operator Classes to provide practical guidance for drivers age 55 and over. (Beginning drivers should see the New Drivers section of this website).
About The Classes
Our classes provide the latest information on visual scanning techniques and driver knowledge requirements. Discussion and class participation are encouraged during simulations of potential traffic problems. Overall, the classes enhance driver confidence, comfort, and safety, through practical guidance for traffic accident protection, while addressing the following critical topics:
- Being ready to drive
- Understanding signs and adjustments in the car
- Alcohol and Medications
- Distraction, Drowsy, Aggressive Driving and Road Rage
- Managing Space and Visibility
- Ways to extend the driving career
- New Technology
Classes are held two days per week at four hours each day, for a total of eight hours. There are no written exams and no on-the-road driving.
Insurance Discounts

Virtual Classes
Virtual classes are hosted on Zoom by a AAA Central Penn Driving School Instructor. Virtual classes allow to see and interact with the instructor as you would in a regular class. To sign up you will need to have a computer/tablet/cell phone with a camera, a microphone, an internet connection, and an active email account. Upon registration, we will email you a link to join the class at the designated time.
Class Registration
Those registering for the 4-hour refresher classes must provide verification that they took an 8-hour class - or a previous 4-hour refresher class - within the last 3 years to be eligible. To register for a class, call AAA Central Penn at 1-800-723-7021 or print, fill out, and mail in this registration form.

In-Car Mature Operator Refresher Option
For Mature Operator classroom participants who are interested in a more in-depth experience, the AAA Driving School also offers refresher sessions beyond the classroom. This behind-the-wheel experience provides real-world demonstrations of the concepts covered in class, including:
- Updated laws & driving techniques
- Handling driving emergencies
- Dealing with aggressive drivers
- Speed adjustment techniques
- Establishing visual skills
- Communicating intentions to others

When filling out the form, check the box for "Hourly In-Car Instruction Only" and write in "Mature Operator Refresher" next to that line. Send the completed form, along with full payment, to the AAA Driving School to start the enrollment process.
