Highlights

Newport, Rhode Island

In the 19th century, Newport was America's Versailles. It was here that the great merchant princes and robber barons of the Gilded Age erected the elaborate summerhouses they so ingenuously dubbed "cottages." At the height of its splendor, a Newport season was a giddy whirl of grand fêtes, yacht races and elaborate beach picnics for assorted Vanderbilts, Astors and Morgan’s. Today, it is the privileged traveler who marvels at the splendor of great mansions like The Breakers, The Elms, or Rosecliff. Gone are the days when "Tessie" Oelrichs, one of Newport's fabled hostesses, had 12 skeleton ships anchored offshore and dramatically lit for her legendary "White Ball."

Fun Things to Do:

  • Visit Rose Island Lighthouse Overlooking Narragansett Bay, This restored 1869 lighthouse still serves as a navigation aid for sailors and is operated by vacationers who act as "lighthouse keepers" in exchange for accommodations.
  • Marble House, the Vanderbilt family envisioned this home to be the "Temple of the Arts" in America. This opulent stone palace, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles, was commissioned in 1888, and is opened for tours.
  • Take a cliff walk stroll along a picturesque mile and a quarter of Newport's famous Cliff Walk, the path between the rocky coastline and the "backyards" of many of Bellevue Avenue's palatial cottages.

Boston, MA

Boston, the capital of Massachusetts, is one of the most historic cities in North America and home to many of the USA’s leading universities, including world-renowned Harvard in neighboring Cambridge. The abundance of historical sights, first-class museums and opportunities to take in a cross-section of cultural activities, music, art, theater and more explain why Boston is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.

Fun Things to Do:

  • View the Public Garden, the first botanical gardens in the country, an oasis in the heart of the city, The garden is home to a majestic monument of George Washington and the famous swan boats, which grace the waters of the lagoon.
  • Browse Newbury Street , an eclectic collection of 19th-century brownstones, upscale boutiques, sidewalk cafes and trendy galleries line this enchanting street, situated in the historic Back Bay section of the city.
  • Follow the Freedom Trail. Begin at Boston Common and follow in the footsteps of our forefathers on this 2.5-mile trail delineated by red bricks, highlighting 16 of Boston's most historical sites from the American Revolution.

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor is known as the gateway to Acadia National Park, one of America’s favorite parks, and is situated on Mount Desert Island right on the gorgeous Frenchman’s Bay. Here you will find Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard, where you can often see the country’s first sunrise. Bar Harbor is beloved by visitors from the endless outdoor activities to award-winning dining and accommodations and it is routinely on national “best of” lists, including one of America’s Favorite Towns.

Fun Things to Do:

  • Bar Harbor is worth a visit year-round. Luckily, the weather in Bar Harbor is just about always perfect for getting outside.
  • The Manor House, which was built in 1887 was converted into housing for the biomedical research facility, Jackson Laboratory. Today the town is just as vibrant as ever; Main Street is lined with shops, boutiques and dining of all sorts.
  • Visit Acadia next door and the working waterfront encircling it. Bar Harbor captures something quintessentially Maine.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Boasting unspoiled natural beauty and a spectacular coastline, New Brunswick’s pristine shores await you. St John lies on the Bay of Fundy, which boasts the highest tides in the world and the astonishing Reversing Rapids, caused when the tides change and the river is forced to reverse direction and flow upstream. Discover the inspired eateries that has put uptown Saint John as a true foodie destination.

Fun Things to Do:

  • Spot the “Reversing Rapids,” Saint John’s best-known attraction. The powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the tide attempts to push the river back upstream, then the tide ebbs and the river appears to reverse itself and flow over the rocks, creating the appearance of reversing rapids.
  • See what you can find at Saint John City Market, one of North America’s oldest continuing farmers markets.
  • Visit Rockwood Park, one of Canada’s largest urban parks and a year-round adventure destination. With freshwater lakes, over 31 miles of trails, a golf course and the zoo, there is something for everyone.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Located on the shores of the world’s second-largest natural harbor, the “City of Trees” adds to the pastoral beauty of Canada’s maritime region. An extensive network of walking trails extends from the waterfront out to a series of beautiful parks and vibrant gardens, inviting exploration.

Fun Things to Do:

  • Explore the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's extensive collection, with over 2,000 permanent works.
  • Take a historical and anecdote-filled tour through the streets of Halifax. Explore the hilltop fortress and the Citadel, and stroll through the beautiful Victorian-style public gardens.
  • Relax on a drive through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside to the moody, weathered village of Peggy's Cove. Walk along the rocks to view the craggy coastline with its bold glacier formed outcroppings of granite and its impressive lighthouse. Drive through the softer South Shore area back to Halifax, and enjoy another view of the city.

Tour Activity Level: 2
This tour requires average physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk reasonable distances, possibly over uneven ground and cobblestoned streets.
